7 Things Wrong with The Umbrella Academy Season 4 (Spoilers)

The Umbrella Academy Season 4 brings the beloved series to a close, but unfortunately, it does so in a way that leaves much to be desired. The season introduces a host of confusing plot twists, character inconsistencies, and unresolved storylines that detract from what could have been a strong finale. Below, I’ve outlined seven major issues that contribute to the season’s disappointing conclusion.

1. Characters Lost in the New Universe

All eight of our main characters settle into their new lives in an unfamiliar universe without questioning what exactly happened. The lack of curiosity and the sudden shift into a new plotline leaves viewers scrambling to understand the events. By the time you start piecing things together, the show has already thrown you into new, unnecessary plot twists.

2. Luther’s Acceptance of Sloane’s Disappearance

Luther, who has been deeply devoted to Sloane, strangely accepts her disappearance in this new universe without any substantial explanation or closure. The show never addresses why she was omitted from this reality, leaving a significant gap in the story.

3. Klaus’ Uncharacteristic Transformation

Klaus, previously one of the show’s standout characters, becomes sober, germophobic, and overly paranoid. This drastic change strips away much of what made Klaus a fan favorite, leaving us with a character who only returns to form in the very last episode.

4. Number Five’s Uncharacteristic Mistakes

Number Five, the most intelligent and seasoned of the siblings, takes a baffling turn in this season. Despite his extensive experience as a former time-traveling assassin, he fails to notice that his CIA supervisor is part of a cult—something that Luthor, of all people, ends up figuring out instead.

5. The Downfall of Number Five Continues

As if the previous misstep wasn’t enough, Number Five makes an even worse decision by accepting a rescue mission from a stranger who had just kidnapped his sibling. This leads to a bizarre and unresolved romantic subplot where he becomes entangled with his brother’s wife, turning what was once a sibling-like relationship into something unsettling and unnecessary.

6. The Cult’s Mysterious Motives

The season introduces a cult that somehow figures out how to revert to the original timeline. However, their motives and methods remain frustratingly vague. The key to their plan involves Jennifer, but the show never explains how they arrived at this conclusion, leaving viewers with more questions than answers.

7. The Enigma of Jennifer

Jennifer, a mysterious girl who possesses Durango, another version of Marigold, is an enigma from start to finish. Her interactions with the Umbrella Academy are hinted to be world-ending, but her true nature and motives remain unclear. Her sudden decision to trust Ben, a stranger, over her uncle and her final transformation into a giant monster that destroys all timelines feels forced and poorly explained.

Conclusion

The Umbrella Academy Season 4 had the potential to end on a high note, possibly rivaling shows like The Boys or Invincible. Instead, it falters under the weight of its convoluted plot and character missteps. It almost feels as if Netflix deliberately chose an ending that would ensure fans wouldn’t ask for more. The result is a frustrating and unsatisfying conclusion to what was once a promising series.
