EXCLUSIVE: Lionsgate Expands the John Wick Universe with John Wick: Under The High Table

Lionsgate is set to further expand its highly successful John Wick universe with a new action series titled John Wick: Under The High Table. This exclusive news has been confirmed by Deadline. The series will be executive produced by the franchise’s star, Keanu Reeves, and its director, Chad Stahelski, with Stahelski also directing the pilot episode.

A New Chapter in the John Wick Saga

John Wick: Under The High Table is written by Robert Levine, co-creator of The Old Man. The story picks up directly after the events of John Wick: Chapter 4. Following John Wick’s departure from the world of the High Table, the universe is left in a precarious state. A host of new characters will emerge, vying to establish their presence while some familiar faces remain committed to maintaining the old order.

The series promises to “combine new and old and thrust the Wick universe into a new age,” suggesting a blend of newly created and existing characters. This approach mirrors the strategy used in The Continental: From the World of John Wick, a prequel series that became one of Peacock’s most significant original launches of 2023.

Creative Powerhouses Behind the Series

Stahelski, who signed a deal with Lionsgate in January to oversee creative direction for the John Wick franchise across film, TV, and other media, will executive produce John Wick: Under The High Table through his company 87Eleven Entertainment. Levine will serve as showrunner and executive producer, alongside Reeves, Erica Lee, and Basil Iwanyk from Thunder Road, who are also producers of the John Wick movies.

Although Reeves will be heavily involved in the project as an executive producer, he currently has no acting role in the series. However, he is said to be very hands-on, ensuring the series maintains the high standards set by the films.

The Story So Far

In John Wick: Chapter 4, John (Reeves) and fellow assassin Caine (Donnie Yen) earn their freedom from the High Table. Winston (Ian McShane) is reinstated as the Hotel Manager of the rebuilt New York Continental after John kills the High Table’s Marquis (Bill Skarsgård), but is left gravely injured. The film ends ambiguously, with John presumed dead, although not confirmed, and a post-credits scene teasing a confrontation between Caine and Akira (Rina Sawayama), hinting at further storylines.

This additional scene could serve as a precursor to a John Wick spinoff featuring Yen’s Caine character, which is also in development at Lionsgate. Additionally, the studio is working on a spinoff film titled Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas, set between the third and fourth John Wick movies.

What’s Next for the John Wick Universe

A fifth John Wick film is currently in development, and the new series John Wick: Under The High Table is not expected to interfere with plans for this potential new movie. Lionsgate, however, has declined to comment on these developments.

Robert Levine, co-creator and executive producer of FX’s The Old Man and Starz’s Black Sails, brings his expertise to this new venture. Levine is represented by WME and TFC Management. Stahelski is represented by WME and attorney Tara Kole.

Stay tuned for more updates as the John Wick universe continues to expand and evolve, bringing more action-packed stories and beloved characters to the screen.
